31 May 08 How To Deal With Harassing Phone Calls

Harassing phone calls can be very nerve wracking and frustrating. What at first may have seemed like a harmless prank may now be a phone harassment that is interfering with your life. You need to put a stop to these harassing calls, and face this issue before you let it get out of hand. Dealing with harassing phone calls is the only way to make them go away.

What can you do? There are different ways you can deal with a phone harasser (I.E. calls made by someone who uses any means to intimidate you, such as silence, heavy breathing, threats, etc.). However, before you take any action, you need to carefully think through your options and decide what course of action is best suited for your specific situation. The following are some helpful tips on what you should and should not do when dealing with harassing calls:

What you should not do:

- Do not call the harasser back - Your first instinct may be to find out the harasser’s number and call them back. This is not a good idea because you run the risk of adding further fuel to the fire. You will likely only make the situation worse, resulting in more frequent and aggressive calls.

- Do nothing - Don’t take phone harassment lightly. Although the harassing caller may eventually become bored with phoning, you can’t take this chance, especially since the individual could be dangerous. Additionally, by doing nothing, you’re letting the harasser know they can get away with their crime, which may encourage them to harass other phone consumers.

- Do not be afraid to report threatening phone calls - As soon as a caller threatens you or any other person in your household with physical harm, immediately report this to your phone company and the authorities. Try to tell them everything you can about the call, including what was said, what the person sounded like, the time of the call, the phone number, etc.

13 May 08 What Information Can I Expect From A Reverse Phone Lookup?

Many people expect a reverse phone lookup to provide them with plenty of useful information, and some of them expect these details to be provided without paying a fee. Although it is possible for a free reverse number search to give useful information, it is imperative that you understand what can and cannot be provided for free.

Most free reverse phone number lookups will provide you with the following results (Note: information found on free sites may be dated and inaccurate, as these databases are not typically updated on a regular basis):

- The general location of a number. This includes the state and sometimes the city that is associated with the 3-dgit area code that was entered into the search along with the 7-digit phone number. The general location can be provided for both landline and cellular phone numbers at no cost, because area code information is considered public, and does not provide the number owner’s exact location.

- The phone company the number is registered with. Many free services can provide the name of the telecommunication company that is associated with the mobile or wire line number.

- The type of phone linked to the number. A free backwards phone search can usually inform you whether or not the number you are investigating is connected to a home or business landline phone, or a wireless phone.

Additional and more personal information that can be supplied by a free search, including the number owner’s name and address, is only available for landline numbers listed in a public phone directory. Cellular phones are considered private, so you will need to pay for a cell phone trace if you would like identification information.
